Menopause is often a very difficult time for most women. The symptoms of menopause are many. Most women will experience several side effects during menopause. Physical symptoms as well as emotional difficulties can be severe. Feelings of depression or sadness are not uncommon. Bodily changes range in weight gain, dry skin, thinning hair, bloating and vaginal dryness. There are usually hot flashes and night sweats along with interrupted sleep. Mood swings and memory lapses may very well be the result of loss of sleep. The severity of these emotional and biological symptoms vary from woman to woman.

Another side effect is often acne. Sometimes acne in menopausal women is linked with taking Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). The Progestin can cause the breakout of acne. When menopause begins, there is a gradual shutdown of the ovaries thus producing hormonal deficiencies. When that happens, it can trigger the above mentioned symptoms including acne. In adult female acne, one of the strongest androgens is testosterone. Testosterone can cause an increase of sebum. An overproduction of sebum is responsible for blocking pores which makes it difficult to slough off dead skin cells. These skin cells then get caught in pores and hair follicles that results in pimples and acne. Hormones play a big part in teenage acne as well as menopausal acne. In both cases, there is an overproduction of sebum.

If you are experiencing acne during menopause, over the counter medicines and lotions may help but will not cure acne. There are some simple changes you can make that don’t require you to purchase pills and creams.

Change Your Diet. Lesson the amount of sugar in your diet along with white flour. Drink plenty of water. We hear this all the time but it does help flush our bodies of impurities and keep us hydrated. Fresh vegetables and fruits are always beneficial to our bodies. Fruits and vegetables contain bioflavinoids which are antioxidants that can help prevent skin damage.
google_ad_height = 60;

google_ui_features = "rc:6";
//-->

Vitamins A and B. Vitamin B is a stress reducer. When in menopause, there is quite a lot of stress in our lives. Lack of sleep and all of the physical symptoms take their toll. Vitamin A (retinaic acid) is beneficial in healing the skin. It can regulate sebum production leading to less oily skin.

Take Fish Oil. Omega 3 fish oil helps with free radicals and is recommended to use for the reduction of inflammation. Fish oil aids many health conditions including heart disease. It is important to take a good quality fish oil at a dosage of about three capsules of 1000 mg each per day.

Zinc. Zinc has been proven to help in the reduction of acne more than any other supplement. Zinc decreases inflammation and boost the immune system. However, be careful with the dosage as it can be toxic at levels of 100 mg. per day. I take no more than 50 mg about 5 times a week.

Cleansing Your Skin. Although menopausal acne is a hormonal issue, it makes perfect sense to cleanse your skin properly. Be gentle with your skin avoiding abrasive cleansers or excessive scrubbing. Reducing sebum production from the sebaceous glands is very important but do not overuse any product that does this. Menopausal skin tends to get dry and flake easily. Use a water based cream or lotion to moisturize.

I am confident that these are positive steps you can take to help prevent menopausal acne.

Trying various natural cures for acne may be of interest to you if you experience side effects from either oral or over the counter acne treatments. There are many to choose from. I will list these natural cures alphabetically.

Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera is a species of a succulent plant. It is often used in oral and topical treatments to reduce inflammation and to stimulate healing. Aloe vera has been used for centuries to help heal burned or damaged skin. Many products in the market today contain aloe vera. You can find it in soaps, tissues, body washes, lotions and shampoos.

Azelaic Acid. Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid found naturally in rye, wheat and barley. It is also produced by yeasts naturally found on the skin. It is effective in treating mild to moderate acne. It works against the bacteria that causes acne and can help with the renewal of cells in the follicles of the skin. Topical creams should contain no more than 20% of azelaic acid as it can be an irritant.

Bioflavinoids. Bioflavinoids are the natural pigments in fruits and vegetables. They are antioxidants used to help prevent skin damage. There are well over 800 different bioflavinoids. They are often used in oral acne treatments but can be a natural acne cure if one consumes a lot of fruits and vegetables. Cherries, grapefruits, oranges, lemons, grapes, black currants, apricots, blackberries, cantaloupes and broccoli are some of the foods high in bioflavinoids.

Echinacea. Echinacea is the beautiful purple coneflower. These days the herb is used in preparations that fight colds and the flu. Echinacea is beneficial in treating skin disorders such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. It can help reduce clogged pores to get rid of blackheads and the bacteria that promotes pimples.

Plant Oils. Many oils are beneficial to the skin. Olive, primrose oil, flax seed oil, and wheat germ oil are just of the few oils used in many topical acne treatments. They stimulate healing by the essential fatty acids they contain. They give the topical products the consistency it needs and also help to dissolve clogged pores.

google_ad_height = 60;

google_color_border = "0080FF";
google_color_bg = "ffffff";

google_ui_features = "rc:6";
//-->

Salicylic Acid. Salicylic acid comes from the bark of willow trees. It has long been considered a medicinal plant. It is a beta hydroxy acid. This ingredient is also used to help dissolve the buildup in clogged pores. It is probably one of the most used ingredients in todays battle against pimples and other major skin disorders. It can cause minor irritation to the skin so it should be tested before it is applied to the whole face.

Sulphur. Sulphur is a mineral and it is present in our cells. The bodies natural healing abilities are stimulated by sulphur. It is used as an ingredient to help dry up pimples. Sulphur helps reduce the production of sebum which can cause clogged pores.

Tea Tree Oil. Tea tree oil is an essential oil from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant from the east coast of Australia. It is effective on anything from dandruff to acne and blackheads. It is capable of penetrating the skin to help disinfect and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A, C, D, E and all the B vitamins are extremely helpful in building our immune systems and regenerating healthy cells. Zinc and selenium and sulphur are important minerals with zinc being considered one of the most natural acne cures that help get rid of pimples.

These are just some of the natural treatments that can be used to get rid of pimples fast.

Well should you or shouldn’t you? The answer to this questions varies from situation to situation. In most cases, the answer would emphatically be NO. There are times when popping or squeezing a pimple is a good option.

How do you determine this? The answer being: how big is the pustule? If you are faced with a tiny, pinhead sized pimple, that baby is just asking to be squeezed. You can do this very effectively. Make sure your hands are clean. Wash the pimple gently. Steaming your face over warm water for a few minutes is beneficial. In many cases, if the pimple is that small, it will break open on it’s own. Boil a needle in water to sterilize it first. If you choose not to do this, you may spread the infection. Your other option is to squeeze it between very clean fingers. Once the pimple is drained, swab the area with a good disinfectant. Peroxide is good or even a treatment with benzoyl peroxide works well.

However, if your pimple is the size of a mountain, please leave it alone. If your pimple has not come to a head, please leave it alone. Squeezing these two kinds of pimples may cause scarring of the skin tissue. While you may be able to drain the pimple, you are most likely spreading the very bacteria that caused the pimple in the first place. The pimple will definitely take longer to heal. Dermatologist never recommend popping or squeezing pimples.

If you are continuously breaking out with pimples, try to find out why. Read up on it as there are many attributing factors why some people are plagued with pimples. Getting rid of pimples as fast as possible is important for self esteem. There are many over the counter medicines that can be really effective in controlling acne. When I see a person with acne, my heart goes out to them. People need to feel good about themselves so don’t struggle with this alone. There is help out there
